Jongomero Camp | Tanzania Safari. Jongomero is a great place for a trek. We love it more than any other place in Tanzania, and we don’t say that lightly. It is one of the most private camps in Ruaha National Park and has great service, delicious food, and knowledgeable guides. We really think Jongomero is a great choice, and we especially like the idea of joining it with Fanjove Private Island, which is its sister property.

What We Know About Jongomero Camp

This mountain is in the southeast of Ruaha National Park. It’s the only camp nearby that lets you be alone and guarantees that your Ruaha Safari trip will give you the chance to see only wild animals. Usangu is the closest camp—it’s about two hours away!

The main guest area is a beautiful building made by locals with a big “makuti” roof. It is tucked away in the woods next to the dry river bed of the Jogomero River for most of the year. It’s comfortable and roomy, and the eating area is a little lower, with a view of the seasonal river.

There is a “hippo-friendly” swimming pool right next to the walk that leads to the tents. You might want to stay in one of the ten tented rooms full-time because they are so roomy and well-equipped. There is a porch that faces the riverbed and is a great spot to relax and enjoy the view while watching birds and other animals. From the comfort of your own tent, you might see a lion, a group of elephants, or even a very rare ground hornbill.

If you want to experience the real spirit of safari, go to Jongomero. The camp is very fancy, but it has a peace and quiet that you can’t find anywhere else. Its location makes it perfect for private wildlife watching of the large groups of buffalo and elephants that live in the acacia forests and along the winding river beds.

During the dry season, fancy meals on the dry riverbed are a great way to enjoy fine food by candlelight while sitting under the stars. Another nice thing about the movable gin bar is that it’s great for relaxing after a busy day on safari.
