Tanzania Cities and Towns. Dar es Salaam is the main hub for foreign flights and the city that most tourists will pass through, even though Dodoma is the real capital city.
Dar es Salaam is where most southern safaris in Tanzania begin. It’s also the hub for getting to Zanzibar and the hideaways on the mainland coast.

The much more rural town of Arusha, which used to be a Maasai village, is generally where northern safaris begin. About 70 km from Arusha is Kilimanjaro Town, which is where flights from Europe and East Africa land. People often spend one night before or after hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. Zanzibar Town is the center of Zanzibar. Stone Town is the only interesting part of town.
