The Truth About Thanda Island

Thanda was designed to be a large, central family home. It has five luxurious double rooms that can easily sleep ten people. Each one has a beautiful glass and tile bathroom, as well as an outdoor shower and a relaxing star bath. Around the corner, on the other side of the island, there are two thatched bandas with two stories that were made and finished with beautiful local materials. These can sleep at least eight more people. All of the rooms are surrounded by wide verandas that offer shade and warmth, whether you want to be alone or with other people.

The main living room is big, airy, and open. It has a grand piano, sofas, and a huge aquarium on one wall that looks out over the grounds and the sea. Now that the gardens are being cared to and changed even more, the original center of casuarina pines is being expanded to include hundreds of palms, bouganvillea, and even lawns. There are wooden paths that lead to the beach, the pool house with all its fun beach toys, and the lit-up astroturf tennis court.

Thanda is an interesting mix of modern luxury, smart home comforts, and caring about the environment. The lodge has its own solar farm, which is the second biggest in Tanzania. It provides power for your air conditioning and gallons of fresh water. It is being worked on to water the island and make the fields bigger.

All of the water on the island is desalinated. The island hires and takes care of its own marine scientist, who spends each day writing down sightings in the area, leading guests on dives and snorkeling trips, and taking care of her underwater coral gardens and nursery.
